These flights are offered free of charge and are made possible through the generosity of EAA member volunteers. Since it began more than 1.5 million Young Eagles have enjoyed a flight through the program. Young Eagles have been registered in more than 90 different countries and have been flown by more than 42,000 volunteer pilots. Ankeny flight dates are May 1st, May 22nd, June 5th and August 7th. July 17th is a flight date with an additional flight camp sponsored by the Iowa Aviation Promotion Group. Click the logo for more info or contact event organizer Alan Core at 515-371-8577.

Iowa Celebrates 100 Year Anniversary of Powered Flight
The state of Iowa celebrates 100 years of powered flight in 2010. The first flight in Iowa occured on June 10, 1910 from the old Burlington Country Club in Southeast Iowa. Iowa has a rich aviation history. The Wright brothers lived near Cedar Rapids during a period of their childhood from 1878 to 1891. Amelia Earhart lived in Des Moines from 1908 to 1914 and saw her first airplane flight at the Iowa State Fair at age 10. Ellen Church, of Cresco, is generally considered the first flight attendant in the United States. And, Peggy Whitson, from Beaconsfield, recently served on the International Space Station. Look for events to be scheduled later in the year.

Blizzard Tests New Snow Removal Equipment
Record snow fell this week and closed the Ankeny Airport and much of the city of Des Moines on Wednesday. About 13 inches fell here with blowing winds gusting to over 50 mph creating terrible drifts and making it miserable to be outside. Our snow removal crew worked through the night and the airport was open the next morning. Polk County has a new snow removal machine that is now being used on our runways and taxiways. This monstrous snow blower was featured on KCCI news. Click the link to watch the video of it in action.

Ribbon Cutting Ceremony Celebrates New Ownership
Thanks to everyone that came out for our ribbon cutting ceremony. Our new owner Bob Boesen did the honor of cutting the ribbon and general manager Darrel Marshall delivered a short speech outlining his plan for the continued growth and improvement of our business. The party afterwards was a casual evening of drinks and snacks. Door prizes of an Exec 1 windbreaker and a Discovery Flight were handed out the next day. We estimate close to 200 people showed up over the course of the night to wish us good luck and see our most recent changes.

Charter Department Adds New Planes and Pilots
The Exec 1 Charter department has increased its selection of aircraft.
We have added a second King Air 90 as well as two Navajo Chieftains, which
are longer and roomier than our Navajo CRs. Bud Truman has moved from
down the hall at the National Guard and taken over duties as our Chief
Pilot. We have also added three new charter pilots to help us cover our
expected increase in charter trips. Check out the Aircraft Charter link
